Kolkata, March 10 (NationPress) Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar stated on Tuesday that the Election Commission of India (ECI) will determine the final number of phases for the West Bengal Assembly elections based on the readiness of law and order at the ground level.

"The ECI's full bench has been reviewing the law and order situation in West Bengal over the past two days. All stakeholders have assured the ECI that the polling process will be peaceful, violence-free, and devoid of any intimidation. The ultimate decision regarding the number of polling phases will be contingent upon the on-ground law and order preparedness in the state," Kumar remarked.

He added that during the ECI's recent review visit to West Bengal, the full bench directed state administration officials to strictly implement the rule of law and operate without any bias.

"It is imperative that officers maintain a non-partisan conduct, and we have clearly communicated this during our discussions with various levels of officials over the last two days," the CEC emphasized.

He also reiterated the ECI's zero tolerance stance towards any form of election-related violence, whether it occurs before, during, or after the elections.

"The Commission has resolved to take decisive action against anyone found involved in such incidents," the CEC asserted.

In response to queries regarding allegations that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal has inconvenienced voters, the CEC clarified that SIR is a national practice conducted periodically across all states.

"This exercise has been executed fairly, with active participation from officials at every level. The ongoing judicial review of voters classified under the logical discrepancy category is being conducted as per the Supreme Court's directives and with oversight from the Calcutta High Court," the CEC noted.

He further stated that the primary objective of the SIR is to ensure that no genuine voter is excluded and that no fraudulent voter remains registered.

Additionally, he announced that there will be 100% webcasting in all polling booths.

Point of View

It is evident that maintaining a peaceful electoral environment is paramount. The ECI's commitment to a fair and violence-free election reflects a dedication to democratic principles.
