Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 9 (NationPress) The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Gyanesh Kumar, issued a stern warning on Monday to district magistrates, superintendents of police, and police commissionerate heads in West Bengal, indicating that the Election Commission of India (ECI) has the power to launch departmental actions against any officer found negligent in their duties, even after the upcoming Assembly elections.
This caution was articulated during a significant meeting held between the full bench of the ECI and relevant officials on the first day of their two-day inspection in West Bengal.
During this session, the CEC emphasized that he would not accept any reports of violence, the use of firearms, or crude bombs during this election cycle. He urged law enforcement agencies to seize all illegal weapons and explosives ahead of the polls, as much as possible,” revealed an insider from the Chief Electoral Officer's (CEO) office in West Bengal.
Moreover, he instructed that law enforcement should take strict actions against any occurrences of violence, both prior to and following the elections, once the results are announced.
The CEC reminded attendees of previous instances of post-election violence in West Bengal following the 2021 Assembly elections, underscoring the need for vigilance.
Additionally, he warned police officials to avoid taking sides with any political party.
“He also mandated that police must promptly file FIRs in cases involving the dissemination of fake news or misinformation on social media,” stated the insider.
On March 10, the ECI’s full bench will convene with senior bureaucrats and police officers from the state, including Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty and the acting Director General of Police Peeyush Pandey. The meeting is slated to commence at 10 a.m. and will be followed by a press conference featuring the CEC.
The Commission's full bench will return to Delhi later that same day.
