Why Did ECI Dismiss Trinamool's Harassment Claims Against Shami and Dev?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 7 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) dismissed allegations from the Trinamool Congress regarding the issuance of hearing notices to the party's Lok Sabha member and actor-turned-politician Deepak Adhikari, better known as Dev, and cricketer Mohammed Shami. The party claimed these notices were intentionally designed to harass them.
In a statement released by the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal on Wednesday evening, it was clarified that both Dev and Shami were called for hearings due to blank linkage columns in their submitted enumeration forms.
“The assertion is misleading. The enumeration form distinctly indicates that the linkage columns were left unfilled by the elector. Consequently, they have been summoned for hearings alongside other similarly situated electors as per the ECI’s notification,” read the statement from the CEO’s office, also shared on its official social media platforms.
This clarification identifies both Dev and Shami as “unmapped voters”.
News about the hearing notices for Dev and Adhikari emerged on January 5. Since then, the Trinamool Congress has asserted that the notices were meant to intimidate them.
The ruling party expressed particular concern regarding the notice issued to Dev and his family, questioning how a notice could be directed to a three-time Lok Sabha member from the Ghatal constituency in West Midnapore district.
In a similar vein, the Trinamool Congress argued that the hearing notice sent to Shami constituted harassment for a sportsperson who has contributed significantly to Indian cricket.
Ultimately, the ECI provided clarification on Wednesday, outlining the rationale for summoning Dev and Shami for hearings amid the ongoing Special Intensive Revision process.
