Kolkata, March 27 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has ordered the immediate suspension of Avijit Paul, the Inspector-in-Charge of Basanti Police Station in South 24 Parganas district, following violent clashes that occurred on March 26. A police sub-inspector was reportedly assaulted by a group of miscreants believed to be affiliated with the ruling Trinamool Congress.
In a communication from the ECI's Under Secretary, Shakti Sharma, it was noted that police failed to implement proper measures despite having prior knowledge of the public events involving two political parties.
The ECI's statement highlighted that although Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) were available in the days leading up to the incident, Paul did not request their assistance for maintaining order. This demonstrated significant negligence and a dereliction of duty on his part.
Consequently, the ECI mandated his suspension effective immediately and instructed that departmental proceedings be commenced against him. He will be succeeded by Inspector Prabir Ghosh from the Enforcement Branch of West Bengal Police.
