Why Were Three Micro-Observers Suspended by ECI?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 17 (NationPress) The West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer's (CEO) office announced on Tuesday that the Election Commission of India (ECI) has opted to suspend three micro-observers involved in the current Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in the state due to alleged negligence in their duties.
According to a statement from the West Bengal CEO's office, "Following reports from ECI-designated District Electoral Roll Observers, the three micro observers have been suspended today. Electoral Roll Micro Observers (ERMOs), who are assigned by the ECI, must execute their responsibilities with care, and cannot delegate their tasks to others. Failure to do so will result in accountability," the office stated.
The suspended individuals include a manager from Bengal Grameen Bikash Bank, a senior manager from UCO Bank, and a Central Excise Inspector.
These officials were appointed as micro observers for the ongoing SIR initiative in the state.
An internal inquiry has been mandated by the Commission to investigate the actions of the three officials.
The original appointing authorities will provide the ECI with regular updates on the investigation's progress.
Previously, on Monday, the ECI had suspended seven assistant electoral registration officers (AEROs), all of whom are state government employees, citing similar charges of negligence.
The ECI also urged the state government to commence departmental proceedings against these seven AEROs.
On Tuesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee remarked that while these seven AEROs will be relieved of their duties related to the SIR, they will not face job loss.
"They will not partake in any election-related functions but will be assigned to different tasks by the state government. I am confident they will excel in those areas," the Chief Minister stated.
Moreover, she criticized the ECI for unilaterally suspending the seven AEROs.
"They were denied an opportunity to present their case. The Commission is continually intimidating electoral officials and encroaching on state jurisdiction. I urge the ECI to adopt a more democratic approach," the Chief Minister expressed.
