Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 15 (NationPress) As the first phase of the two-part West Bengal assembly elections approaches on April 23, the Chief Electoral Officer’s office in West Bengal has laid down strict directives for sector officers, presiding officers, and all polling officials to uphold neutrality throughout the electoral process.
An insider from the Chief Electoral Officer’s office revealed that clear instructions have been issued to polling officers prohibiting them from soliciting or accepting assistance from representatives of any political party, including polling agents, during the voting.
Polling officers are also instructed to refrain from accepting food, water, or any items provided by political party representatives. Instead, they are advised to depend exclusively on the provisions arranged by the administration, in line with the Election Commission of India's directives.
Earlier in February of this year, the Election Commission of India took disciplinary action against seven personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces for attending an Iftar party, which was against the guidelines.
Furthermore, in March, three other personnel faced disciplinary measures for visiting a local Trinamool Congress office during their duty hours and engaging in informal discussions with local party members.
Sector officers have been reminded to maintain continuous communication with the forces’ coordinators in their respective regions to ensure maximum safety and security on the day of the elections.
Additional instructions from the Chief Electoral Officer’s office include conducting mock polls before voting begins and mandatory checks of electronic voting machines and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail machines.
“Officers are instructed to report any irregularities or issues encountered during the voting process immediately to the Chief Electoral Officer’s office, utilizing the ECINET app if necessary,” stated the insider from the Chief Electoral Officer’s office.
A strict prohibition has also been placed on the use of mobile phones within polling stations. Detailed guidelines regarding polling station locations, the installation of CCTV cameras, and access controls to safeguard voters' privacy have also been issued by the Commission.
