Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ahmedabad, Feb 25 (NationPress) The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids at nine locations within Ahmedabad on Wednesday, focusing on the Anas Group and its affiliates, as per official reports.
This group specializes in the processing, packaging, and manufacturing of tobacco products marketed under the names “Amber Tobacco”, “Umda Tobacco”, and “Sama Filter Khaini”.
The operation was initiated under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), 1999, based on credible intelligence suggesting that members of the Nagariya family, connected to the Anas Group and its partners, possess numerous overseas assets.
These assets reportedly include high-value properties and investments in Dubai, which are suspected to be financed through hawala dealings and unauthorized banking channels.
During the operation, the ED seized a total of Rs 1.01 crore in Indian currency and foreign currency approximating Rs 33.34 lakh.
Furthermore, officials recovered 16 gold bars weighing 1.6 kg, marked with foreign inscriptions, valued at around Rs 2.5 crore, alongside 168 silver bars weighing nearly 80 kg, with an estimated market value of about Rs 2 crore.
Various documents linking the ownership of overseas properties in Dubai to the Anas Group and its family members were also confiscated.
"The raids were executed based on reliable information regarding alleged infringements of the Foreign Exchange Management Act. The recovery of significant cash amounts, precious metals, and documents is intended to reveal the complete scale of unaccounted overseas assets held by the group and its associates," stated an official.
The agency reassured that investigations are ongoing.
Officials are scrutinizing the confiscated documents and assets to trace the pathways utilized for overseas fund transfers and to identify additional potential breaches of FEMA.
