Kalaburagi (Karnataka), June 11 (NationPress) The national President of Congress, Mallikarjun Kharge, expressed on Wednesday that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids are aimed at fragmenting the party within the state.
He voiced this concern while objecting to the ED raids that targeted locations associated with four Congress leaders—one MP and three MLAs—in connection with the Maharshi Valmiki Tribal Welfare Board scam.
In a statement to reporters in Kalaburagi, Kharge remarked, “The officials of the ED are fully aware of the motives behind the raids on Congress leaders. These raids are not unprecedented. During election periods, funds from all parties were confiscated, yet the whereabouts of that seized money remain a mystery.”
Kharge further stated that the Congress MLAs are being unfairly targeted, asserting that the Enforcement Directorate has had a longstanding bias against the party. He suggested that the intent behind these ED raids might be to divide the Congress, but he firmly declared that such an attempt would be futile.
“The current raids are based on accusations of misusing government funds for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. This claim is unfounded,” he added.
In response, Deputy Chief Minister and Karnataka Congress President D.K. Shivakumar, who was in Delhi, mentioned that he learned about the ED raids through the media. “In my opinion, there is no link between the Congress leaders and the scam. Reports indicate that one of the personal secretaries had a note from a leader. Our ministers and legislators are not implicated in this,” he affirmed.
“They have not provided monetary incentives to voters, nor has any money been used during the elections. Officials have informed me that approximately 90% of the misappropriated funds have been reclaimed from those responsible. There is no connection between our legislators, MP, and this scam,” he reiterated.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, addressing the situation in Chikkaballapura, stated, “Let action be taken against whoever is guilty. I will not defend anyone who is culpable. An investigation is underway, and the truth must emerge.”
Basavaraj Rayareddy, CM Siddaramaiah’s Economic Advisor, remarked in Delhi, “It is inappropriate to solely target Congress leaders. The state government is conducting the investigation. These raids are intended to instill fear among Congress leaders and public representatives. The BJP is currently engaging in a politics of animosity,” he claimed.
Congress MLC B.K. Hariprasad stated that the BJP has turned the ED into a weapon against its political rivals.
The ED was executing raids at sites associated with four Congress leaders and others concerning the Maharshi Valmiki Tribal Welfare Board scam in Ballary district and Bengaluru.
A contingent of 60 ED officers initiated simultaneous raids across eight locations, five in Ballary and three in Bengaluru city, starting early this morning, sources reported.
According to ED sources, the raids are being conducted at the residences and offices of Congress Ballary MP E. Tukaram and Congress MLAs Na. Ra. Bharath Reddy, J.N. Ganesh (also known as Kampli Ganesh), and N. T. Srinivas.
Additionally, raids are also being carried out at the Bengaluru office of former Minister and Congress MLA Nagendra.
Moreover, the residence of Govardhan, the personal assistant of Ballary Congress MLA and former Minister B. Nagendra, is also under investigation.
