Did the ED Intentionally Target I-PAC for Supporting Trinamool's Election Strategy?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 9 (NationPress) On Friday, Abhishek Banerjee, the general secretary of the Trinamool Congress and Lok Sabha member, asserted that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has been purposefully focusing on the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC) because the agency was aiding the Trinamool Congress with its electoral strategy and assisting the party during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in West Bengal.
He further accused the ED of persistently harassing Trinamool Congress leaders, including himself and his family members, for an extended period.
“In the past, they have unjustly targeted me, my wife, my children, and my parents. With the Assembly elections approaching, attempts to intimidate us through these central investigative agencies will likely continue. However, neither I nor anyone in the Trinamool Congress will yield to such pressures from New Delhi,” stated Abhishek Banerjee while addressing supporters at a public meeting in Taherpur, located in Nadia district of West Bengal on Friday.
He also expressed confidence that voters from the Matua community, a significant portion of the electorate in Nadia district, would not be deceived by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding their citizenship and voting rights.
In a related development, the West Bengal unit of the BJP filed a petition with Governor C.V. Ananda Bose on Wednesday, alleging that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee obstructed ED officials while they were conducting simultaneous raids at the I-PAC office in Salt Lake and at the residence of I-PAC co-founder Pratik Jain at Loudon Street in central Kolkata.
The BJP called for the Governor's intervention to take necessary action against the administrative and police personnel who accompanied the Chief Minister during these alleged obstructions of the ED’s operations.
In its petition, the BJP voiced that there is no constitutional provision that allows any Chief Minister to interfere with an ongoing investigation and convert law enforcement actions into political spectacles.
