Educational Institutions in Manipur to Reopen for Regular Classes on Friday After Two-Week Closure

Imphal, Nov 28 (NationPress) Following a two-week closure, regular classes across all educational institutions, including schools and universities in six districts, are set to recommence on Friday, as confirmed by an official on Thursday.

In separate directives, the Director of Education (Schools) L. Nandakumar Singh and the Joint Secretary of the Higher and Technical Education Department, Daryal Juli Anal, instructed district and zonal officers to implement necessary measures for the resumption of classes in all government, private, and government-aided institutions, including colleges and universities, starting Friday.

Singh noted that the decision to restart classes was made in consultation with the Home Department.

On November 26, the Manipur government had closed down all educational institutions in six districts under curfew, which included the conflict-affected Jiribam district, for an indefinite period.

An official from the Education Department stated that the closure was a precaution to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and non-teaching staff across the six districts—Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, Kakching, and Jiribam.

Since November 16, District Magistrates in these areas have enforced a curfew following a surge in violence after the discovery of the bodies of three missing children and three women in Jiribam.

On November 24, the Education authorities had initially announced the reopening of classes for November 25, but this decision was later retracted within a few hours.

As a safety measure, the Manipur government on Wednesday prolonged the suspension of mobile Internet and data services for an additional two days across nine districts, including the troubled Jiribam district.

This suspension will remain in effect until 5:15 p.m. on November 29 in nine districts, which include both valley and hill areas: Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, Jiribam, and Pherzawl.

The suspension of mobile Internet and data services was initially ordered by Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi on November 16 due to the unrest following the recovery of the missing bodies.

Since then, the suspension has been periodically extended.

The violent mobs perpetrated attacks on properties of ministers, MLAs, and political figures in Imphal East and Imphal West on November 16 and 17.

According to police reports, 41 individuals have been arrested in connection with the recent violence and unrest.
