Manipur schools cut summer vacation to 1 week amid law and order crisis
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Monday, 22 June announced that summer vacations in schools across the state have been curtailed from the usual three weeks to just one week, citing the prevailing law and order situation. The decision aims to minimise academic disruption and restore continuity in students' education amid ongoing unrest.
Why Vacations Were Cut Short
The Chief Minister noted that normal functioning of educational institutions and government offices had been disrupted for nearly a month following the Tronglaobi incident on 7 April. To recover lost working time, Saturdays were declared working days for all government departments. Singh stated that Saturdays would revert to holidays once pending work is cleared.
The Tronglaobi Incident
The disruption traces back to a targeted attack on 7 April in Tronglaobi village, Bishnupur district, when suspected Kuki militants allegedly hurled a powerful bomb at a home while the family was asleep. A five-year-old boy and his six-month-old sister were killed in the attack, while their mother sustained serious injuries. The incident deepened the security crisis in the state and triggered widespread disruption to civil life.
NEP 2020 Workshop and Education Reforms
Singh was speaking at the inauguration of a three-day workshop on 'Reforms in School Education of Manipur: An Approach to Implementation, Challenges and Opportunities of NEP-2020'. Quoting Nelson Mandela, he said education is 'one of the most powerful tools to change the world.' He emphasised that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 lays down the education sector's responsibilities in achieving the goal of Viksit Bharat (Developed India) by 2047.
Singh also advocated for mother-tongue-based instruction up to Class V, arguing it helps students learn more effectively. He stressed that NEP 2020's successful implementation requires collective effort. 'NEP 2020 can be implemented successfully only when the government, employees and people work together with strong determination,' he said.
What Officials and Educators Said
Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel said India aims to become a fully developed nation by the 100th year of Independence, guided by the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, with NEP 2020 serving as a key driver. Professor Ganga Prasad Prasain, President of Vidya Bharati Purvottar Kshetra, recommended introducing skill development and vocational courses from Class VI onwards alongside regular academic subjects to improve students' self-employment prospects.
What Comes Next
With Manipur's security situation still fragile, the state government's ability to restore normal academic schedules will depend on ground conditions. The workshop's outcomes are expected to shape the roadmap for NEP 2020 implementation across the state's schools in the months ahead.
