Egg Prices Plummet in Namakkal: Farmers Facing Daily Losses of Rs 7 Crore
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Namakkal, March 25 (NationPress) A significant decline in egg prices in Namakkal, recognized as one of India’s major poultry hubs, has raised serious concerns among farmers, who are now facing substantial financial setbacks.
In just three days, the price of eggs has decreased by 40 paise, prompting worries about a lasting decrease in demand.
Producing over seven crore eggs each day, Namakkal is crucial for egg supply not only within Tamil Nadu but also to several other Indian states and international markets. The region is also the benchmark for egg pricing in India, making any price changes here impactful for the national poultry sector.
This drop in prices coincides with a dip in demand, which industry experts blame partly on global instability, including ongoing conflicts involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
Reports indicate that export orders have decreased, while local consumption has not been robust enough to absorb the surplus. In light of this, the National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) held an urgent meeting in Namakkal to evaluate the market situation.
After discussions, the committee opted to reduce prices in a bid to boost demand and manage the excess stock. The benchmark price of eggs, previously at 445 paise on March 22, has now been adjusted to 405 paise.
This latest revision included a noteworthy reduction of 20 paise from 425 paise, highlighting the swift pace of the price drop.
Farmers are expressing concerns that the current price levels are unsustainable, as production costs are considerably higher than the current market rates.
Industry estimates suggest that producers are facing losses of nearly Rs 1 per egg. With a daily output exceeding seven crore eggs, this equates to an estimated loss of approximately Rs 7 crore per day for the area.
Poultry farmers are worried that the situation may deteriorate further if demand does not pick up soon. Many are advocating for government intervention or support measures to stabilize prices and shield the industry from further harm.
Despite the decline in farm-gate prices, retail egg prices in Namakkal remain stable at around Rs 85 per tray. Meanwhile, chicken prices in adjacent Palladam have remained strong at Rs 129 per kilogram. Observers in the industry believe that the upcoming days will be critical in determining whether prices will stabilize or continue to decline, with a revival in demand seen as the pivotal factor.
