New Delhi, Aug 9 (NationPress) Tragically, eight individuals, including women and young children, lost their lives due to a wall collapse caused by relentless rain in the Jaitpur area of South East Delhi, as reported by the police on Saturday.
The collapse occurred in a slum located in the Hari Nagar area during the morning hours, according to law enforcement officials.
The deceased have been identified as Muttu Ali (45), Rabibul (30), Shabibul (30), Rubina (25), Dolly (25), Hashibul, Rukhsana (6), and Hasina (7).
Authorities stated that the victims were caught when a wall adjacent to a temple came crashing down with a loud noise, likely because the unstable structure could not support the weight of the rain-soaked roof and walls.
Immediately following the collapse, local residents rushed to assist in the rescue efforts, helping to transport the injured to the hospital, although the victims unfortunately succumbed to their injuries en route.
The slum, primarily inhabited by scrap dealers, was promptly evacuated to prevent any further incidents, said the police.
Meanwhile, the overnight and morning rainfall significantly disrupted daily life throughout Delhi-NCR, leading to waterlogging in various areas, including Panchkuian Marg, Mathura Road, and Connaught Place.
This waterlogging, coupled with the festival of Rakhi, resulted in severe traffic congestion and delays on key roads.
The rain caused upheaval not only on the ground but also in the air. As per data from Flightradar, over 130 flights arriving at and departing from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport faced delays on Saturday morning.
In light of the weather-related disruptions, airlines released travel advisories. IndiGo and SpiceJet took to X to caution passengers regarding heavy rainfall, encouraging them to allow extra travel time and verify flight statuses before heading to the airport.
Air India also issued a warning on X: “Rain may impact flight operations to and from Delhi today,” advising travelers to consider potential delays caused by traffic congestion in the city.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a rain alert for Delhi on Saturday, predicting moderate rainfall alongside thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds across the national capital. The department also provided essential safety guidelines for citizens amidst worsening weather conditions.
“Today, expect moody skies, moderate rain, thunderstorms, and lightning, with gusty winds (30–40 km/h) across various parts of the city. This isn't merely a forecast; it's a reminder to look out for one another. Drive carefully—roads might be slippery. Secure loose items on balconies and rooftops. Avoid taking shelter under trees during lightning. Stay updated with IMD's official weather announcements,” the IMD posted on X.
