Visakhapatnam, Dec 12 (NationPress) - In a tragic incident, a private travel bus plunged into a gorge in Andhra Pradesh's Alluri Sitharamaraju district during the early hours of Friday, resulting in the death of at least eight pilgrims and leaving many others injured.

The accident occurred on the Chintur-Naredumilli ghat road when the driver seemingly failed to navigate a sharp turn, colliding with the safety wall before tumbling into the gorge.

The bus was transporting 37 individuals, including two drivers, who were en route to Annavaram.

The passengers hailed from Chittoor district and were traveling to Annavaram temple in Kakinada district after visiting Bhadrachalam temple in Telangana.

Due to the lack of mobile network coverage in the accident area, it took a while for authorities to be informed. Once notified, police promptly arrived and initiated a rescue operation. Eight bodies were recovered from the scene, and the injured were transported to a hospital in Chintur.

Five police vehicles and three ambulances were deployed to assist with the situation.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed his shock over the incident and communicated with officials regarding rescue and relief efforts, urging them to ensure the best medical care for the injured.

Home Minister V. Anitha and Minister for Tribal Welfare and Women and Child Welfare G. Sandhya Rani headed to the accident site. They conferred with the Collector and Superintendent of Police of Alluri Sitharamaraju district and instructed them to provide all necessary assistance to the victims.

Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu had previously voiced concerns over the rising number of road accidents and had ordered a third-party audit to investigate the causes. He highlighted that this year alone, 6,433 people lost their lives in 15,462 road accidents within the state.

Officials noted that 79% of accidents stem from over-speeding, 3% from wrong-side driving, and 1% due to distractions like alcohol and mobile phone use.

Andhra Pradesh ranks eighth in road accidents nationwide.
