The suspect has been identified as Jamuna Rout, a resident of Jhinkria village within the jurisdiction of the Nandankanan police station in Bhubaneswar.
According to a senior police spokesperson, the initial investigations suggest that the motive for this heinous act was theft.
The victim, Basanti Behera, aged 75, was living alone at Ananda Bazar in the Baranga area.
The suspect perceived the elderly woman as an easy target due to her age and solitary living situation. After conducting reconnaissance, Rout forced his way into Behera's residence late at night on May 20 to carry out the robbery.
When the elderly woman noticed the intruder, she began to scream. In a panic to silence her, Rout attacked her with a sharp weapon, specifically a blood-stained spade, which was later retrieved from the crime scene.
The brutal assault led to her immediate death. Subsequently, Rout fled the scene with several valuables and items from the home. The following morning, Behera's son discovered her lifeless body in a pool of blood on her bed and promptly filed a report at the Baranga police station.
Upon receiving the report, the police swiftly arrived at the location and launched an investigation to apprehend the perpetrator.
After analyzing CCTV footage from the Bhuwaneswar Smart City control room and conducting ground verification, law enforcement successfully captured Rout on Tuesday.
Rout has since been presented in court, where he was placed in judicial custody. The police are currently verifying the criminal history of the suspect.
