Empowered Women of Varanasi: The 'Green Army' Takes a Stand Against Social Issues

Varanasi, Dec 31 (NationPress) A group of 20 courageous women, referred to as the 'Green Army', from Deora village in Uttar Pradesh, are on a determined quest to eliminate social issues from their community. They have initiated a remarkably effective campaign against alcohol misuse, child marriage, and dowry practices, earning admiration for their social contributions.
The 'Green Army' recently received a motivating letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which they claim has intensified their commitment to their cause.
Nirmala Devi, a prominent member of the Green Army, shared her inspiring journey with IANS, stating, "We are a collective of 20 women, tirelessly working for more than a decade to eliminate social afflictions such as drug abuse and any form of addiction in our village. Our mission is to transform our village into a 'Nasha Mukht' (intoxication-free) zone. Our endeavors have led to the incarceration of numerous offenders, and we take pride in our accomplishments."
Nirmala elaborated that the Green Army’s goals extend beyond fighting substance abuse.
"We are also addressing issues like child marriage and dowry, which have been longstanding problems in our society. We are dedicated to instigating change, and PM Modi’s letter has motivated all of us to persist in our struggle," she added.
Another member, Prem Kumari, recounted the transformative effects of their efforts.
"When I joined the Green Army, I was not even permitted to leave my home. Now, I feel liberated, empowered, and increasingly resolved to advocate for my community. Although we encounter challenges, particularly when persuading those resistant to change, we are confident that with the administration's support and our expanding backing, we will triumph over these hurdles," she expressed.
Manju, another member of the Green Army, shared her sentiments: "We have confronted numerous challenges in our journey, but our determination has only solidified. Our struggle against 'Nasha' and child marriage continues, and PM Modi’s encouragement has been vital in uplifting our spirits."
The success of the Green Army lies not only in their activism but also in their solidarity and empowerment.
Ravi Mishra, President of HOPE Welfare Trust, explained the inception of the Green Army, saying, "We recognized the hardships faced by women in rural regions and chose to take action. We formed the Green Army to empower women and eradicate social evils such as superstition and substance abuse. These women have undergone two months of training, and their efforts are truly making a difference."
The Green Army commenced their journey with a unique venture: a shoe-making workshop in Deora. The initial slippers crafted were not sold but sent as a testament to their resolve to the Prime Minister. In a heartwarming response, the Prime Minister acknowledged their work with a letter of appreciation.
As Nirmala Devi shared the letter with the media, her joy was evident.
"It felt as though PM Modi was with us, standing alongside us. We are overwhelmed by his support," she said, her eyes gleaming with pride.
The inspiring tale of the Green Army and their diverse social initiatives was also featured in a video shared by the Modi Archive.
