Kolkata, Oct 3 (NationPress) As the immersion of major community Durga Puja idols commences this Friday evening, following rain that largely affected the rituals on Thursday, authorities are intensifying security measures at all ghats in and around Kolkata.
Although the immersion process began on Thursday for Dussehra, the turnout was significantly lower, with only puja organizers from residential complexes, private homes, and very traditional community puja organizers participating.
According to a city police officer, starting Friday, the primary community pujas in Kolkata will initiate their idol immersions, leading to a greater crowd at the riverbanks compared to Thursday.
“Therefore, the security protocols, which were already robust since Thursday, will be further strengthened over the next two days,” stated a city police official.
In Kolkata, approximately 3,500 pujas take place, predominantly being community celebrations.
The Kolkata Police anticipates that most community puja organizers will wrap up their immersion activities on Friday and Saturday.
On Sunday, a grand carnival will unfold at Red Road in Central Kolkata, organized by the state government, featuring only 113 award-winning community Durga Puja committees, which will be allowed to conduct their immersion post-carnival.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is expected to attend the carnival.
This leads the city police to believe that the major influx for community Durga Pujas in Kolkata will peak on Friday and Saturday.
An increased number of officers will be positioned at 28 immersion ghats and around 200 locations from which the immersion parades will proceed. Moreover, 28 disaster management teams will be assigned, with one designated for each immersion ghat, and the River Traffic Police will oversee the ghats.
Similar to Thursday's arrangements, the city police will deploy drones for aerial surveillance and have installed extra CCTV cameras at the ghats. Additionally, the use of DJs during the immersion processions has been prohibited.
