Synopsis

In a bid to enhance transport efficiency in Mumbai, Minister Pratap Sarnaik outlines key measures including a task force to evaluate private office hours. With a focus on passenger safety and innovative transport solutions, the government aims to address increasing commuter demands and ensure safer travel.

Key Takeaways

  • Task force formation to evaluate private office hours.
  • Exploration of alternative transport solutions like water taxis and ropeways.
  • Commitment to passenger safety as a top priority.
  • Action against malpractices in app-based transport services.
  • High-level meetings to discuss railway safety measures.

Mumbai, July 16 (NationPress) Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced on Wednesday that the government is implementing multiple strategies to enhance the efficiency of transport services in Mumbai. To alleviate mounting pressure on these services, a task force will be established to assess potential adjustments to the office hours of private firms within the city.

He indicated that suitable measures will be enacted regarding this issue, and the government has also initiated actions against the irregularities associated with app-based transport services.

“Ensuring passenger safety is the state government's top priority. Given the rising number of commuters in Mumbai, the government is exploring alternative transport solutions such as water transport, pod taxis, and ropeways to facilitate smoother travel for passengers.

“By implementing such alternative services, we aim to enhance the overall efficiency of transport systems,” stated the minister while responding to a Calling Attention Motion raised by member Atul Bhatkhalkar in the Legislative Assembly, concerning the recent Mumbra railway incident and the actions being undertaken to secure the safety of railway passengers.

Minister Sarnaik emphasized that while the Railways fall under the purview of the Central Government, the Maharashtra Government is committed to ensuring passenger safety across the state.

The unfortunate train accident in Mumbra resulted in the death of five passengers and injuries to nine others.

“Following the Mumbra incident, a meeting was convened with senior Railway Department officials, chaired by the Chief Secretary, to devise strategies for enhancing the safety of railway passengers in Mumbai.

The Railway Department has been instructed to formulate plans aimed at alleviating the severe congestion of railway passengers in Mumbai, managing crowds at stations, preventing passenger fatalities during travel, and ensuring the safety of railway stations,” Sarnaik stated.

He added that the government is actively pursuing various initiatives to safeguard the increasing number of railway passengers in the state, including Mumbai, with a high-level meeting scheduled to discuss these matters further.

Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Home (Rural) Pankaj Bhoyar, in response to another Calling Attention Motion presented by member Nana Patole, confirmed that a case has been filed regarding the accident that occurred on April 2 on the Shegaon-Khamgaon Highway, with an investigation currently underway.

In this incident, six individuals lost their lives—four from a Bolero vehicle and two from a luxury travel bus—in a collision with a State Transport (ST) bus, while 13 passengers from the ST bus sustained injuries.

A case has been registered against two individuals in connection with this accident.

All three vehicles involved in the collision are under examination by the Deputy Regional Transport Officer in Buldhana, with directives issued to the Public Works Department to install speed limit boards and traffic calming measures at the accident site along the highway,” Minister Bhoyar added.

Point of View

I emphasize the importance of addressing Mumbai's transport challenges. The government's proactive measures reflect a commitment to passenger safety and efficiency. With innovative solutions and a focus on accountability, we must support initiatives that enhance public transport for millions.
