Chennai, June 21 (NationPress) AIADMK General Secretary and the Leader of the Opposition in Tamil Nadu, Edappadi K. Palaniswami, expressed his agreement with Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the diminishing status of native languages in India. He emphasized that the mother tongue holds an irreplaceable position in society.

At a press interaction held at Coimbatore airport, Palaniswami remarked, “Amit Shah has highlighted the significance of the mother tongue. His apprehension lies in the fact that English is being prioritized over regional languages. Everyone is entitled to their perspective, yet the core of Indian identity is deeply rooted in our native languages.”

In response to media inquiries, Palaniswami also discussed the ongoing Keezhadi excavations, stating that the AIADMK has already addressed its involvement in the matter.

“Our IT Wing Secretary K. Pandiarajan has provided comprehensive details on the initiatives during the tenure of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa and subsequent AIADMK administrations. All necessary clarifications have been made,” he stated.

Regarding the Muruga Bhaktargal (Devotees of Lord Muruga) conference set for June 22 in Madurai, Palaniswami reiterated the constitutional right to religious freedom.

“We reside in a democracy where every individual and organization holds the right to worship their chosen deity. The organizers of the Muruga Bhaktargal conference are merely exercising that right. I wish them the best,” he added.

Addressing recent controversies with DMK members allegedly using inappropriate language publicly, the AIADMK leader criticized this behavior.

“We have condemned such statements. The public is upset and disappointed by this conduct. The upcoming Assembly elections in 2026 will serve as a fitting response,” he asserted.

On the occasion of International Yoga Day, Palaniswami acknowledged the importance of yoga for overall well-being and commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his efforts to promote this practice worldwide.

“Yoga is crucial for physical health. Prime Minister Modi has made substantial contributions to its popularity. I extend my best wishes on this occasion,” he concluded.

Point of View

I believe that Palaniswami's statements underscore a crucial conversation about the preservation of native languages and the role of politics in cultural identity. His emphasis on constitutional rights reflects a broader commitment to democracy, while the criticism of DMK's behavior highlights the need for accountable leadership. This dialogue is essential for a progressive political environment conducive to all citizens in Tamil Nadu.
