AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Monday launched a scathing attack on the ruling TVK government in Tamil Nadu over its newly announced crop loan waiver scheme, branding it a 'scientific fraud' and alleging that the administration had deliberately misled farmers while abandoning its own election promises. The remarks were made in Chennai and signal a sharp escalation in the Opposition's offensive against the state government.

The Core Allegation

Palaniswami alleged that the TVK government had fundamentally altered the eligibility criteria for the waiver — shifting from a land ownership-based framework, as promised in its election manifesto, to a loan amount-based formula. The original promise, he said, was a complete waiver of crop loans availed through cooperative banks by farmers owning less than five acres of land. The government's deviation from this commitment, he argued, amounts to a betrayal of the farming community.

He also accused the ruling party of using the scheme announcement to divert public attention from what he described as deteriorating law and order conditions across Tamil Nadu, and of prioritising political manoeuvring and party defections over governance.

AIADMK's 2021 Waiver vs TVK's 2026 Scheme

Drawing a direct comparison, Palaniswami pointed to the scale of relief delivered under his own tenure as Chief Minister. He stated that the AIADMK government in 2021 wrote off crop loans worth ₹12,110 crore availed through cooperative banks, benefiting nearly 16.43 lakh farmers across Tamil Nadu. By contrast, the present TVK government has announced a waiver of only ₹2,044 crore in 2026 — a figure he described as starkly inadequate given the scale of agrarian distress.

Notably, the gap between the two schemes — roughly ₹10,000 crore — is the centrepiece of the AIADMK's political argument, framing the current government's move as symbolic rather than substantive.

Palaniswami's Personal Appeal

'As a farmer who has personally tilled the land, I can say that no government which deceives farmers has survived in history,' Palaniswami said. He described farmers as the backbone of society and equated them to God for their role in feeding the nation, urging the government not to betray the agricultural community.

Broader Political Context

This comes amid sustained Opposition pressure on the TVK government over multiple governance fronts. The crop loan waiver row adds to a growing list of disputes between the ruling party and the AIADMK, which has been seeking to consolidate its base among Tamil Nadu's farming communities ahead of future electoral contests. This is not the first time Palaniswami has invoked the 2021 waiver as a benchmark — it has become a recurring reference point in his critique of the current administration's agricultural policies.

With rural distress remaining a politically sensitive issue in Tamil Nadu, the framing of the waiver as 'scientific fraud' is likely to intensify scrutiny on the government's eligibility methodology and the actual number of farmers who stand to benefit.
