AIADMK rift: DMK's Elangovan says EPS fears losing party grip
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) spokesperson T.K.S. Elangovan on Monday, 18 May claimed that the deepening factional crisis within the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) stems from General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami's apprehension that reinstating senior party veterans could erode his grip on the organisation. The remarks came as tensions across multiple Tamil Nadu district units spilled into the open, prompting police intervention at several party offices.
The Rift and Its Flashpoints
The confrontation between supporters of Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) and a rival faction led by former Ministers S.P. Velumani and C.Ve. Shanmugham has reportedly escalated into a direct contest for organisational control. Party offices in several districts were locked and placed under police security as the standoff intensified. This is not an isolated flare-up — factional fault lines within the AIADMK have been widening since the party's ouster from power in 2021, with periodic purges and counter-mobilisations marking each phase.
What Elangovan Said
Speaking on the crisis, Elangovan said, 'This fight has been going on for quite some time, and Edappadi K. Palaniswami does not want to bring back leaders who were earlier senior members of the AIADMK. He is afraid that if they return, his own position may be weakened. This only reflects the weakness in Edappadi's leadership, which has led to all these splits.'
Elangovan's framing positions the internal war as a leadership-confidence problem rather than a purely ideological divide — a characterisation the AIADMK leadership has not publicly addressed. EPS, for his part, has accused the rebel faction of placing personal ministerial ambitions above party unity.
Rajinikanth, Stalin, and the Vijay Question
Elangovan also weighed in on actor Rajinikanth's congratulatory post on X to actor-turned-politician Vijay following the announcement of Assembly election results. Rajinikanth had separately met former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin, clarifying that their meeting was personal in nature and that their friendship spans nearly four decades, transcending political lines. He also firmly rejected speculation that the meeting was aimed at blocking Vijay's path to the Chief Ministership.
Responding to questions about the episode, Elangovan said, 'What is wrong with it? He appreciates Stalin and knows that Stalin is a close friend of his. When someone from the film industry comes to power, he will definitely wish them. What is wrong with that?'
Film Portfolio Controversy
Elangovan also addressed criticism — raised by actor Vishal and others — over Chief Minister Vijay's decision to allocate the Film Industry portfolio to Minister Rajmohan. 'There should be somebody who knows the film industry. They must be posted as ministers, so that they know what the film industry is and how to improve it. Maybe that is the reason there is criticism,' Elangovan said, stopping short of directly defending or endorsing the appointment.
What This Signals
The AIADMK's internal turmoil plays directly into the DMK's political calculus ahead of the next electoral cycle. A fractured principal opposition weakens accountability in the Tamil Nadu assembly and potentially opens space for newer formations. Whether EPS can consolidate control — or whether the Velumani-Shanmugham faction forces a formal split — will shape the state's opposition landscape in the months ahead.
