New Delhi, June 29 (NationPress) The ethanol blending initiative in India has played a crucial role in reducing the nation's reliance on crude oil imports while also significantly increasing farmers' earnings, stated Hardeep Singh Puri, the Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, on Sunday.
The minister highlighted that in the last 11 years, the government has disbursed over Rs 1.18 lakh crore to farmers through the ethanol blending program.
He further noted that this initiative has enabled India to conserve foreign currency amounting to Rs 1.36 lakh crore by lowering crude oil imports.
"Throughout this period, ethanol has substituted approximately 232 lakh metric tonnes of crude oil, leading to a decrease of nearly 698 lakh metric tonnes in carbon emissions," the minister shared in a post on social media platform X.
"Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ethanol is becoming a pivotal element in the growth of New India," he added.
He emphasized that every drop of ethanol symbolizes the pride and progress of our farmers. The target of achieving 20% ethanol blending has already been accomplished ahead of schedule, according to the Union Minister.
Previously, the minister announced that E20 fuel, which consists of petrol blended with 20% ethanol, is now available at all retail outlets of state-owned oil marketing companies, including Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum.
Initially, India aimed for a 20% ethanol blending in petrol by 2030.
However, this goal was achieved in early 2025, six years ahead of the deadline, marking a significant achievement in the nation’s transition to cleaner energy sources.
Meanwhile, the Union Minister noted earlier this week that India's oil and gas sector has experienced a remarkable transformation over the past 11 years under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In a post shared on social media platform X on Saturday, the minister attributed the advancements to the ‘Digital India’ initiative and technology-driven innovations that have enhanced the country’s fuel infrastructure, making it smarter and more efficient.
