Chaibasa (Jharkhand), March 3 (NationPress) An official from the excise department sustained injuries after a mob attacked the team during a raid in West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand, officials reported on Tuesday.

The excise team had conducted a raid on an illegal liquor manufacturing unit in the region when they were assaulted.

This incident took place in Argundi village along the Chaibasa-Chakradharpur road, where authorities had received credible information regarding the production of illicit liquor at a residence.

Upon receiving the tip-off, a team comprising eight to ten excise officials arrived at the village to investigate and carry out a search. However, the situation quickly escalated during the raid.

Officials stated that a man inside the house allegedly attacked the team using a sharp weapon. Assistant Sub-Inspector Mantu Agarwal was specifically targeted during the assault, suffering significant injuries to his neck and back.

The unprovoked attack caused panic among the officials. As news of the raid spread, a large crowd of villagers, armed with bows, arrows, and other traditional weapons, gathered at the scene. The agitated mob reportedly pursued the excise personnel, compelling them to retreat to prevent further conflict.

During the ensuing chaos, other team members managed to escape unharmed. The injured officer was promptly taken to Chaibasa Sadar Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment. Medical staff attending to him stated that his condition is stable.

Excise Commissioner Niranjan Tiwari visited the hospital after being informed of the incident and met with the injured officer.

In response to the attack, the Chaibasa Mufassil police swiftly initiated an investigation. A police team, led by Station House Officer Vinod Kumar, arrived at Argundi village to commence their inquiry. Security measures have been heightened in the area to avert any further disturbances.

Police sources indicated that one suspect linked to the attack has been detained for questioning, although official confirmation is still pending.

Investigations into the illegal liquor production and the assault on government officials are ongoing.
