Bengaluru, Dec 5 (NationPress) Responding to the ongoing luxury-watch dispute, the Opposition Leader in the Legislative Council, Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, stated on Friday that he "cannot assist" if his comments have disturbed Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister and Congress President D.K. Shivakumar, asserting that "political adjustment drama is not part of my approach".
During a press briefing at his office in Vidhana Soudha, Narayanaswamy emphasized that his remarks were not intended to be personal.
"If my statements regarding the watch controversy have offended D.K. Shivakumar, what can I do? Even now, his Hublot watch is not visible. It is not listed in the affidavit. You have recently provided information about the Cartier watch to the Lokayukta, which was previously unmentioned -- that itself is a breach," he remarked.
He clarified that his goal was not to sensationalize the situation but to address it responsibly.
"I have known Shivakumar since our college days. He is my friend. He has achieved remarkable success. Had we shared similar opportunities, we too could have thrived. If you own a hundred watches, I would celebrate as a friend. Yet, my only query remains: why wasn't it disclosed in the affidavit?" he stated.
Narayanaswamy further mentioned that Shivakumar must show respect for the esteemed position he currently occupies.
"We are not new friends. We have been close since college. You are now the Deputy Chief Minister, and even members of your party envision you as the Chief Minister. I take pride in your success. I’m not envious. I don't possess Cartier, Rolex, or Hublot watches. I only have one Titan," he commented.
He reiterated that he had not accused Shivakumar of theft.
"Previously, the Hublot gifted to the Chief Minister sparked controversy and was turned over to the government. It now resides in the Vidhana Soudha museum. According to your submission to the Lokayukta, the Rolex is valued at Rs 9 lakh, one Cartier at Rs 23.90 lakh, and another Cartier at Rs 12.06 lakh. So, where is the Hublot?" he inquired.
He noted that while Shivakumar declared a Rolex and a Hublot on page 38 of his election affidavit, the Cartier was absent in the 2018 and 2023 filings despite being worn for several years.
