Bhopal, May 3 (NationPress) A farmer tragically lost his life due to a tiger attack in the Balaghat district, located 475 km from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, on Saturday.
The deceased, identified as Prakash Pane, aged 50, was viciously assaulted by the tiger while he was working in his fields near Kudwa village within the Katangi Range of the Tirodi police station area. The brutal attack left him critically injured on the spot, with the predator consuming a portion of his body, as reported by police officials.
Outrage and despair swept through the village, prompting residents to gather at the nearby forest post, demanding accountability and immediate action from the authorities.
“The villagers had alerted the beat guard about a tiger roaming the area just a few days prior, but their warnings went unheeded. Tigers frequently venture into agricultural fields from the adjacent Pench-Kanha corridor. We have repeatedly asked forest department officials to implement precautionary measures to prevent such loss of life,” stated Vijay Dabar, additional superintendent of police, in an interview with IANS.
Residents insisted that they had been sounding alarms for over a week regarding a tiger spotted in their fields. Despite their numerous alerts, no preventive actions were taken, leading to yet another heartbreaking tragedy.
Their frustration was directed at what they perceived as the negligence of the forest department, whom they held responsible for allowing these dangerous incidents to persist. This village has previously experienced fatal tiger attacks, and the community's anger reached a peak.
As per villagers and police sources, the tiger launched its attack on Prakash early Saturday morning around 5 a.m. while he was heading to his fields. The animal dragged him deeper into the area, roaring defiantly as it settled down. Farmers typically arrive at their fields around this time, ready to start their workday. However, their routine was violently interrupted when the tiger ambushed them from behind. Initially terrified, the workers fled, but later bravely attempted to drive the tiger away by throwing stones, though it was too late to save Prakash.
“We have reassured the distraught villagers that necessary actions are being undertaken,” the police officer remarked, adding that, “The victim's body was retrieved from the attack site and, following a post-mortem examination, was returned to his family.
According to regulations, immediate financial aid of Rs 25,000 has been provided to the victim’s family, along with an additional Rs 8 lakh compensation, as per forest department rules.”
The victim reportedly suffered severe injuries, with the tiger having devoured a part of his thigh, leaving a gruesome scene behind. “The forest department plans to tranquilize the tiger and relocate it to a reserve soon,” an official indicated.
This incident is part of a concerning trend of increasing tiger attacks in the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in the Umaria district, where four individuals have been attacked in the past month.
In separate incidents, a man, a woman, and a 12-year-old child lost their lives, while another woman is currently hospitalized due to her injuries.
