Former Australia batter Michael Hussey has revealed he is actively considering an informal offer to become England's Test batting coach, following an approach from newly appointed England head coach Stephen Fleming. The development, disclosed on 21 August, raises the prospect of one of Australia's most celebrated batters guiding the rival English batting line-up.

How the Approach Happened

Hussey and Fleming share a close working bond built over nearly 15 years at Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the five-time Indian Premier League (IPL)-winning franchise, where Hussey served both as a player and later as batting coach. According to Hussey, the inquiry was low-key. 'We obviously get on really well and work a lot together. So, it was just a bit of a passing comment, really saying, ‘Look, what do you reckon? Would you think about being the batting coach?’' he said, as quoted by Fox Sports.

Hussey's Honest Assessment

The former batter, widely nicknamed 'Mr. Cricket', did not shut the door on the role but acknowledged the complexity of the decision. 'My short answer is I would not say no to anything really. It would feel a bit weird — definitely — coaching for England against Australia in an Ashes series, no question,' Hussey admitted. He added that family commitments remain a significant factor: 'The time away from family is a real thing for me. I am not in a position to say yay or nay any time soon.'

Notably, Hussey has prior experience working with England — he served as a consultant during their successful 2022 Men's T20 World Cup campaign held in Australia. A full-time role, however, would represent a considerably deeper commitment.

On Coaching Across Borders

Hussey was candid about his philosophy when it comes to coaching teams from rival nations. 'I love trying to help players get better whether they are Australians, English, South Africans, Pakistani or Indian or anywhere — it does not bother me. I don't feel as if I am coaching against a team. I sort of feel as if I am coaching with a team,' he said. The sentiment reflects a broader trend in modern cricket, where elite coaches and support staff routinely cross national lines.

Hussey Backs Fleming to Succeed

Beyond his own possible role, Hussey expressed strong confidence in Fleming's capacity to lead England's Test set-up. 'He has a very good understanding of the game. Very shrewd operator who gets that balance between enjoyment and fun and relationships,' Hussey said. He also hinted at a subtle shift in approach under Fleming: 'He wants to keep the game moving forward but perhaps not as recklessly as England have been recently. He will try and be a bit smarter with it.' The remark is a veiled reference to England's aggressive 'Bazball' brand of cricket under the outgoing regime.
