Dharmapuri, March 17 (NationPress) In a significant development, farmers from various regions of Dharmapuri district, especially in Harur and Pappireddipatti, have declared a boycott of the forthcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Their decision stems from continuous delays in the execution of the Thenpennai Surplus Water Scheme.

This protest revolves around a long-awaited lift irrigation project that was proposed by the Tamil Nadu government back in 2019. The initiative was designed to channel surplus floodwater from the Thenpennai River by utilizing pumps from the K Echambadi Dam in Harur to irrigate drought-affected areas across 12 panchayats.

The scheme was conceived as a vital solution to combat persistent water shortages and enhance agricultural resilience in the area. Yet, despite the years that have elapsed since its announcement, farmers claim that there has been minimal progress.

The ongoing delays have fueled frustration among the farming community, which continues to face inadequate irrigation infrastructure and frequent droughts. Consequently, local farmer organizations have resolved to boycott the elections as a form of protest.

Plans are in place to display banners across 12 villages, clearly stating that political candidates should refrain from campaigning in these regions.

Additionally, the farmers intend to formally notify the state government of their stance, demanding prompt action on this critical project. The impacted panchayats, including A Vellampatti, Maritipatti, Kelmorappur, Vidukampatti, and Sellampatti, are characterized by numerous lakes, ponds, and wells that could have been revitalized under the proposed scheme.

Farmers argue that the project could revolutionize the region's water management and significantly lessen reliance on unpredictable rainfall.

Over the years, numerous petitions have been directed to the Chief Minister, local authorities, and various government departments advocating for the scheme's implementation. Nevertheless, the lack of substantial progress has heightened discontent among the local populace.

Officials from the district administration have stated that the responsibility for executing the project lies with the state government. They have urged the public against engaging in poll boycotts, stressing the importance of democratic participation and encouraging voters to responsibly exercise their voting rights.

As the Assembly elections draw near, this farmers' protest highlights a larger issue concerning infrastructure delays and agricultural distress, which could potentially sway voter sentiment in the area.
