Liver transplant plea at Bengal CM Adhikari's Janata Darbar: 'Only 15 days left'
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday, 25 June 2025, held a Janata Darbar at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state office in Kolkata, receiving hundreds of citizens who queued up since morning to present grievances spanning healthcare, housing, and law and order. Among the most urgent appeals was that of a father racing against a medical deadline to save his critically ill son.
Father's Desperate Plea for Liver Transplant Funds
Subhajit Roy, a resident who travelled to the Janata Darbar seeking the Chief Minister's intervention, described a harrowing situation. His son has suffered from liver disease since birth, and doctors have now advised a transplant within 30 days — of which roughly 15 days had already elapsed by the time he made his appeal.
'My child has had liver disease since birth, and his condition has now become critical. I got him treated at several government hospitals, including PG Hospital and AIIMS Delhi… Doctors have advised a liver transplant within 30 days. Around 15 days have already passed, and I have not been able to arrange the funds,' Roy said.
Roy added that the estimated cost of the transplant stands at ₹18–20 lakh or more. 'I have spent all my savings, sold my belongings, and taken loans, but still have nothing left. Only 10–15 days are remaining. I have come here seeking help from the Chief Minister for my child's liver transplant,' he said.
Other Grievances Raised at the Darbar
Sayantan Jana from Behala East raised a separate concern involving a dispute with his tenant. Jana also alleged harassment and intimidation linked to local political influence, claiming the matter remained unresolved due to what he described as 'TMC hooliganism'. The allegation has not been independently verified.
Several other attendees raised issues around healthcare access, housing, and law and order, seeking direct administrative redress from the state leadership.
How the Darbar Functioned
Officials stated that multiple applications and grievances were received during the session and forwarded to the relevant departments for further action. The Janata Darbar is designed to offer citizens a direct channel to raise concerns with the state's top leadership, bypassing routine bureaucratic routes.
Context: Adhikari's Second Janata Darbar Since Taking Office
This was Chief Minister Adhikari's second such public grievance session. He had held his first Janata Darbar in May 2025, shortly after assuming office, at the same BJP state office in Kolkata. The format mirrors similar outreach exercises held by chief ministers across states, though conducting it from a party office rather than a government venue is notable. Critics argue such forums, while symbolically accessible, depend heavily on follow-through by the departments to which cases are referred.
With Roy's son's transplant window narrowing, the outcome of this particular appeal is likely to draw public attention to whether the state's emergency medical assistance mechanisms can respond within the time available.
