Karur, Sep 30 (NationPress) The Tamil Nadu Police apprehended renowned YouTuber Felix Gerald on Tuesday for allegedly disseminating false and damaging statements regarding the unfortunate stampede at the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay's campaign rally in Karur on September 27, which resulted in the deaths of 41 individuals, including numerous women and children.
Authorities indicated that his latest video might incite public disorder and spread false information while an official investigation is ongoing.
Previously, law enforcement had cautioned that strict legal measures would be enforced against anyone sharing content that incites fear or disrupts public safety. The public is encouraged to avoid spreading misinformation and to assist with the inquiry.
Gerald's arrest occurred shortly after Karur Town Police verified that a First Information Report (FIR) had been lodged against high-ranking TVK officials. The individuals named include TVK General Secretary of Election Campaign Management N. Anand, also known as ‘Bussy’ Anand, State Joint Secretary Nirmal Kumar, and Karur West District Secretary Mathiyazhagan.
The case, which has been presented to the Karur Judicial Magistrate Court No. 1, cites five sections of the Indian Penal Code, including negligent homicide and failure to obey public safety directives.
Mathiyazhagan has already been detained and is currently under interrogation by a specialized police unit in Karur.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who visited Karur shortly after the incident, reaffirmed his administration's commitment to ensuring accountability. “We have established a commission of inquiry headed by retired judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan. It is our responsibility to prevent such tragedies from recurring. Those spreading rumors that disturb public peace will face consequences,” he stated.
Opposition AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) harshly criticized the DMK government's management of crowd safety.
“The administration has failed to safeguard the lives of innocent individuals. A completely transparent investigation is necessary, not a mere façade,” he remarked.
Actor-turned-politician Vijay, whose party hosted the rally, expressed profound grief and committed to cooperating with investigators. “My heart goes out to the families enduring this unimaginable loss. We will assist all investigations to ensure justice and support for the victims,” Vijay declared.
His party has also pledged financial support to the affected families. This tragedy has intensified discussions regarding safety measures at political gatherings in Tamil Nadu.
The state government is actively working on implementing stricter regulations for crowd management and public assemblies, while opposition leaders are demanding independent oversight and greater accountability to avert such grave oversights.
