Chennai, Oct 4 (NationPress) The Tamil Nadu Water Resources Minister and prominent DMK figure Duraimurugan stated on Saturday that the state authorities are prepared to arrest Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) President Vijay if deemed necessary by the ongoing investigation into the Karur stampede. He emphasized, however, that there will be no unjust actions taken.
"The judge made a valid point about Vijay's leadership abilities. If the situation demands his arrest, we will proceed, but it will not be a case of witch-hunting or unnecessary detentions," Duraimurugan informed the media in Vellore, as the state prepares for an in-depth investigation into the tragic incident on September 27 that resulted in 41 fatalities.
The Madras High Court has adopted a stringent approach toward this man-made disaster, assigning a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Asra Garg, the Inspector General of the Chennai North Zone, to investigate the unfortunate event.
In compliance with the court's orders, records from the Karur City police station are being moved to Chennai to be submitted to the SIT, transitioning from a standard inquiry to a court-supervised, high-level investigation aimed at establishing accountability.
Criminal charges have already been filed against senior officials of TVK — N. Anand, the General Secretary, and Nirmal Kumar, the Joint General Secretary — under five sections of the Indian Penal Code for negligence and endangering lives.
Moreover, the court has raised significant questions regarding the involvement of Vijay and other party organizers.
Criticism has intensified due to reports that Vijay departed from Karur shortly after the deadly incident, leading to mounting calls for accountability.
The police in Namakkal district are also preparing to confiscate Vijay's campaign bus after reviewing over two hours of video footage and 30 mobile clips from the campaign rally site.
However, during a court session, the High Court questioned the rationale behind seizing the bus, indicating that any action must be legally substantiated.
Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, the DMK Deputy General Secretary, responded to the unfolding events in Chennai, suggesting that the public should interpret the court's comments on Vijay's leadership while expressing trust in the SIT's capabilities.
"The SIT team appointed by the High Court will execute a fair and unbiased investigation," she remarked.
The initial actions of the SIT, along with the court's probing questions, indicate a determined push to unravel the failures — from crowd management breakdowns to potential political negligence — as the families of victims and the public demand transparency and accountability.
