Chennai, Sep 29 (NationPress) The police force in Tamil Nadu's Karur have escalated their efforts against high-ranking members of Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) in relation to the tragic stampede that resulted in the deaths of 41 individuals during actor-politician Vijay’s election rally at Velayuthampalayam on September 27.
Sources reveal that authorities are taking steps to apprehend TVK General Secretary N. Anand, Joint General Secretary C.T.R. Nirmalkumar, and District Secretary Mathiyazhagan.
A dedicated police unit has been established to locate and detain these leaders for questioning, following allegations that they ignored numerous safety advisories before the deadly crowd surge.
Investigations by law enforcement uncovered that prior to Vijay’s rally, vehicles were improperly parked near the Velayuthampalayam junction, obstructing movement, while a large crowd of volunteers and attendees amassed in the same vicinity, creating hazardous overcrowding.
Reportedly, local police and officials had warned the TVK organizers—namely Anand, Nirmalkumar, and Mathiyazhagan—about the dangers of congestion and possible suffocation, insisting on improved crowd management and spatial organization.
However, law enforcement claims these alerts were overlooked, leading to the catastrophic stampede.
In light of these findings, summons were issued to the three TVK leaders for an inquiry.
Despite this, police have reported that the leaders have not appeared and are currently evading capture, prompting the formation of a specialized task force to locate and arrest them.
Authorities confirmed that several criminal charges have been filed in the First Information Report (FIR), including allegations of negligence resulting in loss of life.
The Karur tragedy has sparked a wave of shock and political unrest throughout the state. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has previously announced a judicial inquiry to be led by retired Madras High Court judge Aruna Jagadeesan, aimed at determining accountability and establishing safety protocols for political events.
Stalin has also visited the families of the victims, pledging full government assistance while urging caution against the spread of unverified information.
Actor Vijay, who heads TVK, expressed profound grief over the fatalities, labeling the incident a “political conspiracy” and calling for an independent investigation.
Opposition parties, including the AIADMK and BJP, are demanding accountability from the ruling DMK for the oversights that led to the stampede. As the special police team actively seeks the evading TVK officials, the focus is shifting towards attributing individual responsibility as the judicial inquiry proceeds.
