Chennai, Oct 1 (NationPress) Following the tragic stampede that resulted in the loss of 41 lives during Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s (TVK) public meeting in Karur, the party associated with actor-turned-politician Vijay announced on Wednesday that all forthcoming public engagements over the next two weeks will be “temporarily postponed.”
This decision comes amid the rising shock and mourning throughout Tamil Nadu after the unfortunate incident that occurred during Vijay’s “meet the people” event on September 27 at Velusamypuram, Karur.
The gathering, which was initially planned as part of Vijay’s outreach campaign ahead of Tamil Nadu’s 2026 Assembly elections, turned chaotic as the crowd exceeded safety limits, inciting panic and a tragic rush.
More than 60 others sustained injuries in the incident.
In a message shared on social media, the party's official account expressed “deep anguish and regret” over the tragic loss of lives.
“We are filled with anguish and regret over the loss of 41 of our brethren. In light of this situation, our leader’s (Vijay) upcoming 'meet the people' programs are being temporarily postponed. Updates regarding these will be shared later,” the statement conveyed.
Vijay’s 'meet the people' initiative had been attracting large crowds every Saturday since its inception, with stops in Tiruchirappalli, Namakkal, and most recently Karur.
This program is viewed as a significant move in the TVK leader’s political debut, aimed at strengthening his connection with local communities and energizing supporters ahead of his first electoral challenge.
The party has faced substantial scrutiny in the wake of the Karur tragedy.
Concerns have been raised regarding crowd management, venue safety, and police presence, while political rivals have demanded accountability.
The state government has initiated a one-member commission of inquiry headed by retired judge Aruna Jagadeesan to investigate the incident.
By pausing Vijay’s roadshows, TVK seems to be signaling a period for reflection and damage control, while also honoring the sorrow of affected families.
Party insiders indicated that leadership will assess safety protocols and event logistics before resuming public activities.
The tragedy has overshadowed Vijay’s carefully constructed political momentum, yet his party’s prompt acknowledgment and decision to suspend events may help mitigate public outrage and showcase sensitivity during this challenging time.
Revised schedules are anticipated to be shared once the inquiry advances and safety measures are reevaluated.
