Chandigarh, Nov 12 (NationPress) The Central government has approved the Ferozepur-Patti rail link in Punjab, a significant development that will cut down the distance between Ferozepur and Amritsar. This project is particularly vital from a strategic perspective, given its proximity to the Pakistan border, stated Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu on Wednesday.

Bittu emphasized the project's strategic and economic value, as it reduces the distance between Ferozepur and Amritsar from 196 km to 100 km and shortens the Jammu-Ferozepur-Fazilka-Mumbai corridor by 236 km.

The Ferozepur-Patti rail link will span 25.72 km at an estimated cost of Rs 764.19 crore, which includes Rs 166 crore allocated for land acquisition by the Railways.

This project will act as a vital connection between the Malwa and Majha regions, improving regional mobility and logistics efficiency, he noted.

Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for this “historic gift” to Punjab, Bittu highlighted that the new rail line would link the Jalandhar-Ferozepur and Patti-Khemkaran routes, offering a direct connection near the international border.

Traversing areas of strategic defense significance, it will enable rapid movement of defense personnel, equipment, and supplies.

Bittu noted that the project promises considerable socio-economic benefits, impacting nearly 10 lakh people and generating approximately 2.5 lakh employment opportunities. It is expected to serve 2,500-3,500 daily passengers, including students, employees, and patients from nearby villages.

The rail link is anticipated to stimulate trade and industrial growth, lower freight transportation costs, and enhance access to agricultural markets, thereby promoting investment in education, healthcare, and essential infrastructure.

Moreover, it will connect Amritsar, a significant commercial, educational, and religious center attracting over one lakh tourists daily, with Ferozepur, ensuring faster connectivity and stronger regional integration. Importantly, the new alignment will restore a historic route lost during the Partition, reducing the distance between Ferozepur and Khemkaran from 294 km to 110 km.

Point of View

The sanctioning of the Ferozepur-Patti rail link is a significant development that underscores the government's commitment to enhancing infrastructure and connectivity in border regions. It not only aims to improve local transport but also plays a crucial role in national security by facilitating rapid movement in strategic areas. This initiative aligns with broader economic goals and reflects an overarching strategy to bolster regional integration.
