Guwahati/Thiruvananthapuram, April 8 (NationPress) As the eagerly awaited Assembly elections in Assam and Kerala approach, polling officials and security teams have ramped up efforts to guarantee transparent and fair voting on the eve of the elections.

Authorities in both states have finalized most logistical and administrative arrangements, including a robust deployment of personnel and security forces.

A significant highlight of this election in Assam is the establishment of women-managed polling stations, showcasing efforts to enhance inclusivity and gender representation. Concurrently, in Kerala, the distribution of election materials and preparations are advancing without any hitches.

In Assam's Lakhimpur, approximately 4,748 polling personnel and 3,000 police officers have been assigned to ensure efficient voting operations.

In Silchar, District Commissioner Ayush Garg confirmed that Cachar district is fully equipped for the final polling phase, with over 13,000 personnel deployed across 1,732 booths, including nearly 400 women-managed stations.

Kokrajhar officials affirmed the district's readiness for the Assembly elections, with polling staff and police present in all constituencies.

In Dibrugarh, District Commissioner Vikram Kairi mentioned that teams will depart early at 7:30 a.m. to ensure prompt arrival at distribution centers. The polling personnel have already set off from Lahowal Polytechnic Institute under strict administrative oversight.

In Nagaon, District Commissioner Devashish Sharma greeted polling officers, presenting them with traditional gamosas. He noted that the district's situation is "absolutely fine," with all polling officers having reported for duty. A total of 8,221 polling officials, including both men and women, have been deployed in the area. Polling officers encouraged voters to come early and exercise their democratic rights.

In Sivasagar, Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were retrieved from secure locations, and officials have departed for their respective polling stations. Similarly, in Hailakandi, polling personnel and presiding officers are en route to their designated booths, with 50 women-managed polling stations established, where all duties will be performed exclusively by female staff.

In Biswanath, a polling official expressed excitement, stating that this experience is a first in their life and a moment of pride.

Preparations are also in full swing in Kerala.

In Thiruvananthapuram, election materials were distributed at Karthika Thirunal Government School as polling day approaches.

Likewise, in Kannur, voting materials, including EVMs, were dispatched to Thondiyil St. Joseph School for the Pervoor constituency.

The campaigning for the April 9 Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry wrapped up on Tuesday. Voting will occur in a single phase across all three regions, covering 126 seats in Assam, 140 seats in Kerala, and 30 seats in Puducherry. Results are slated for announcement on May 4.

In Kerala, the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), under Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, is vying for a third consecutive term, which would be a historic achievement in the state's political landscape. The LDF's campaign emphasizes that there is "no alternative" to its governance. The rise of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as a significant contender, following its first Lok Sabha seat victory in the state in 2024, has added a new layer to the electoral dynamics. Meanwhile, the United Democratic Front (UDF) aims to leverage its recent successes in parliamentary and local elections to secure an Assembly win.

In Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is pursuing a second term and a third consecutive term for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), has dominated the election campaign. His platform combines welfare initiatives with identity-focused politics, notably the Orunodoi direct benefit transfer scheme that aids around 40 lakh women.

In Puducherry, the NDA government headed by All India N.R. Congress (AINRC) leader N. Rangasamy has been in power since 2021. Given the Union Territory's small size and 30-seat Assembly, analysts suggest that the personal appeal of candidates may play a more significant role than larger political narratives.

Point of View

The upcoming Assembly elections in Assam and Kerala represent a significant moment in the political landscape. With efforts to ensure inclusivity and fairness in voting, these elections could shape the future governance of both states. The presence of strong candidates and the focus on key issues will undoubtedly attract national attention.
