Visakhapatnam, Jan 4 (NationPress) The inaugural commercial validation flight has landed successfully at the Bhogapuram Greenfield International Airport located in Vizianagaram district on Sunday, marking a significant milestone in the aviation industry of Andhra Pradesh.
The Air India flight arriving from New Delhi touched down at the Bhogapuram Airport, situated approximately 50 km from Visakhapatnam.
Among the passengers on the test flight were Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu and Vizianagaram MP Kalisetti Appala Naidu, accompanied by senior officials.
This test flight landed on the airport's 3.8 km-long runway, recognized as the longest in the country, constructed using cutting-edge technology.
The airport, developed by GMR Group through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) framework, operates on a design, build, finance, operate, and transfer basis, with an inauguration slated for June.
GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited (GVIAL), a subsidiary of GMR Group, is establishing the airport across 2,200 acres, with an estimated investment of Rs 4,592 crore.
As per GVIAL, 96 percent of the construction work has been completed.
During the event, Ram Mohan Naidu stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the airport within the next 4-5 months.
He emphasized that the airport will transform the landscape of North Coastal Andhra, significantly enhancing air connectivity in the region and establishing it as a prominent economic center.
The Bhogapuram Airport is anticipated to be a crucial asset for the forthcoming Visakhapatnam economic region.
Ram Mohan Naidu previously mentioned ongoing efforts to ensure seamless road connectivity from Visakhapatnam to the new airport.
He indicated that road access from the port city to the airport would be established via seven routes, with completion expected by April. Additionally, plans for an elevated expressway are under consideration.
Last month, the Civil Aviation Minister inaugurated the Aviation, Aerospace and Defence (AAD) EduCity near Bhogapuram Airport.
Spanning 136 acres, AAD EduCity is touted as India's first integrated platform for aviation, aerospace, and defence education.
This EduCity aims to serve as a national capability platform to address the pressing global and domestic demand for aviation professionals, positioning India as a leading source of aviation talent.
