Patna murder case cracked: Four arrested in Anand Kumar contract killing
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna Police on Thursday, 3 July 2026, announced a breakthrough in the Anand Kumar murder case, arresting four accused persons and recovering the motorcycle allegedly used in the crime. The case, which had drawn significant attention in Bihar, is now being investigated as a contract killing rooted in a long-standing land dispute.
Background: The Murder and Initial Investigation
The case dates to 30 May 2026, when the body of Anand Kumar, a resident of Paithani Natthupur, was discovered near the bypass under the limits of Beur Police Station in Patna. His family lodged a formal complaint, leading to the registration of Beur Police Station Case No. 320/26 under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was subsequently constituted under the supervision of City Superintendent of Police (West) Saket Kumar. The first arrest — of Umesh Kumar alias Sutali Rai — was made on 4 June 2026, following which the SIT expanded its sweep using technical surveillance and human intelligence.
The Latest Arrests
In an operation conducted on Thursday night, four more accused were apprehended from different locations. They have been identified as Rajiv Kumar (47), Adarsh Kumar alias Golu (25), Roshan Kumar (20), and Gauri Shankar (46). Police recovered one motorcycle and four mobile phones from their possession.
'During the course of the investigation, police first arrested Umesh Kumar alias Sutali Rai on June 4. Building on technical surveillance and human intelligence, the SIT subsequently arrested four more accused from different locations,' Saket Kumar said at a press conference on Friday.
A Contract Killing Over a Land Dispute
According to police, the accused disclosed during interrogation that Anand Kumar was allegedly murdered as part of a contract killing (supari). Investigators stated that the alleged motive was a long-standing family dispute over land involving Anand Kumar and one Bhutali Rai.
Notably, the three alleged shooters — Golu Kumar, Prince Kumar, and Mayank Kumar — who reportedly carried out the murder are already in judicial custody in connection with a separate criminal case registered at Didarganj Police Station.
Investigation Ongoing
Officials confirmed that the investigation is continuing to establish the precise roles of all individuals involved and to gather further evidence. Appropriate legal action will be taken against all accused in accordance with the law. The SIT's progress in cracking the case within weeks points to growing pressure on Bihar Police to resolve high-profile crimes swiftly.
