Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 22 (NationPress) Longtime Congress figure and CWC member Ramesh Chennithala received an unexpected lift when CPP Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and MP Priyanka Gandhi made a surprise visit during his anti-drug initiative in Kerala's Wayanad. This unanticipated appearance revitalized party workers and bolstered Chennithala’s ongoing mission to combat drug abuse throughout Kerala.
In a statement to IANS, Chennithala reflected on the experience, describing it as "truly special". Initially, he had invited Priyanka Gandhi to inaugurate the event, as she was nearby, but she had expressed time constraints.
“I had asked Priyanka if she could inaugurate it, but she said she was pressed for time,” he recounted.
However, after the event concluded on Sunday, a vehicle arrived, prompting Chennithala to approach. To his astonishment, both Sonia and Priyanka Gandhi were inside.
“Soniaji inquired about the program, and upon learning it was a campaign against drugs, she congratulated me. Priyanka then emerged, greeted by roaring applause from party supporters,” Chennithala reminisced.
"It was a moment of immense joy, providing me with renewed energy for this campaign."
“Later, Rahul Gandhi, who is also in Wayanad, called to congratulate me after hearing about my campaign,” he added.
Chennithala has organized large rallies in district centers as part of the statewide anti-drug initiative.
Three additional rallies are planned, with the final one in Idukki on October 17.
Following these events, the campaign will expand to schools and colleges statewide.
"Addressing drug issues is crucial. The backing from Soniaji and Priyanka Gandhi serves as an important morale boost. It demonstrates the party’s dedication to social matters and sends a powerful message to the youth," the Congress veteran stated.
Party members expressed their enthusiasm at witnessing two top leaders in person, emphasizing that their presence illustrated Congress’s commitment to grassroots efforts.
This surprise visit is anticipated to enhance the campaign’s impact, drawing increased attention to the fight against drug abuse in Kerala.
