Thiruvananthapuram, April 2 (NationPress) In a vigorous start to the party's campaign in Kerala, Congress General Secretary and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra delivered a powerful address on Thursday, celebrating the state's rich history of social reform while sharply criticizing both the BJP-led central government and the ruling LDF.

During her speech at Chirayinkeezhu in Thiruvananthapuram district, Priyanka Gandhi shared her personal insights from her inaugural year representing Kerala.

She described the “magic” of the state, rooted in its cultural values of equality, compassion, and communal harmony.

Referencing the reformist Sree Narayana Guru, she asserted that Kerala’s social fabric embodies “the true spirit of India,” where diverse communities have thrived together with mutual respect over centuries.

Utilizing personal stories, she emphasized the impact of Malayalis in various sectors, from nurses and ASHA workers to farmers and caregivers, highlighting a collective commitment to service.

Her mentions of Wayanad were intended to strengthen her bond with local issues, particularly those affecting farmers and rural laborers.

Yet, her address swiftly transitioned to a critique of governance.

Priyanka Gandhi noted the alarming rise in unemployment, stagnant wages, and the deteriorating public health system in Kerala, pointing out staffing shortages and inadequate resources.

She charged the state government with neglecting the needs of ASHA workers, fisherfolk, and traditional industries like coir, claiming that the support systems in place remain woefully inadequate despite ongoing hardships.

On the national level, she launched a fierce critique of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's policies, accusing the Centre of contributing to escalating fuel and LPG costs and asserting that India’s economic choices are becoming increasingly subject to external influences.

She also cautioned that recent trade policies could have detrimental effects on MSMEs and agricultural producers, intensifying economic vulnerability.

In a politically charged comment, she labeled the LDF government as ineffective in opposing the Centre, alleging a pervasive lack of accountability and resistance.

Framing the upcoming election as a pivotal choice between continuity and change, she urged voters to “hold those in power accountable” at both state and national levels.

Priyanka Gandhi’s message blended critique with commitments, as she outlined the welfare agenda of the Congress-led UDF, including initiatives like free bus travel for women, inspired by successful programs in Karnataka.

She called for focused assistance for coastal communities, revitalization of struggling sectors such as coir, and expanded job opportunities to mitigate migration.

Highlighting Kerala’s human capital as its greatest asset, she encouraged voters to “awaken for development” and select a government that is “compassionate and responsive.”

As the campaign gains traction, her speech indicates a strategy that combines emotional resonance, welfare promises, and pointed political critiques, setting the stage for an intense electoral contest in the state.

Before heading back to Delhi later today, Priyanka Gandhi will address election rallies in Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram districts.

Kerala's elections are set for April 9th, where 140 new legislators will be elected, and she is anticipated to return for further campaigning in additional districts.
