Rahul Gandhi Condemns Assam CM's Remarks on Kharge
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 7 (NationPress) Senior Congress figure Rahul Gandhi vehemently criticized Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday for his purported derogatory remarks about Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress president and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, labeling the language as "abusive, shameful, and unacceptable".
In a post on X, Gandhi firmly denounced the comments, emphasizing that Kharge is a "senior, widely respected Dalit leader and mass representative" whose experience and stature are "unmatched in Indian politics."
He stated that any insult directed at Kharge transcends personal offense, serving as a direct affront to millions from the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC-ST) communities nationwide.
“This is not an isolated incident,” Gandhi asserted, contending that such statements showcase a "deep-rooted and systematic mindset" within the BJP and RSS.
He further charged the ruling party with a history of undermining Dalit icons, arguing that whenever a Dalit leader "speaks the truth," they are met with humiliation and personal attacks.
Referencing the legacy of B. R. Ambedkar, Gandhi claimed that the disrespect shown towards Dalit figures aligns with what he described as the ideological essence of the BJP-RSS alliance.
He pressed Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding his silence on this matter.
“Do you back the language employed by Himanta Sarma?” he questioned, adding that the Prime Minister’s silence should not be perceived as powerlessness but as "implicit consent."
He warned that if the Prime Minister fails to speak out while the dignity of countless Dalits is purportedly being compromised, it equates to evading responsibility and becoming a "participant in that insult."
The remarks have heightened the ongoing political strife between the Congress and BJP as both parties exchange pointed allegations about leadership, ideology, and social justice.
