New Delhi, Aug 19 (NationPress) The absence of Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi during the special discussion in Parliament on Indian Air Force Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla's groundbreaking mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS) has ignited a political controversy. The BJP labeled this absence as “unfortunate” on Tuesday, accusing the MP of a consistent pattern of missing significant national events, while the Congress defended him, citing his involvement in the ongoing ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ in Bihar as the reason for his non-attendance.
The discussion, titled “India’s First Astronaut Aboard the International Space Station — Critical Role of Space Programme for Viksit Bharat by 2047,” took place in Parliament on Monday, highlighting Shukla's achievements and India's escalating position in space exploration.
In a statement to IANS, BJP leader Rakesh Tripathi remarked, “Some matters must rise above politics. Every Indian takes pride in Shubhanshu Shukla. When such a historic session occurs and the entire world is observing, Rahul Gandhi's absence is regrettable. National issues require unity, not trivial politics.”
BJP Jammu & Kashmir President Satpal Sharma also noted, “Rahul Gandhi is often absent when significant events transpire in Parliament. Not everyone can achieve what Shukla has accomplished. PM Modi acknowledged his contributions today, but the Opposition appears unwilling to extend such respect. This is why the Congress continues to lose public trust.”
BJP leader Nitin Navin criticized LoP Gandhi, stating, “Understanding the LoP is challenging. He appears to be a confused individual, and this confusion is mirrored within the Congress party.”
Conversely, the Opposition clarified their full support for Shukla's accomplishment while emphasizing their commitment to pressing domestic issues, particularly the alleged voter data problems associated with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll in Bihar.
RJD leader Mrityunjay Tiwari remarked, “LoP Rahul Gandhi is currently in Bihar leading the ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ until September 1. This is why he could not be present. However, everyone else from our side attended.”
Congress MP Karti Chidambaram expressed pride in Shukla’s milestone yet pointed out, “The real concern is the government’s approach. SIR is a grave issue. It’s not solely about Shukla — we celebrate him — but SIR is an exclusionary process. The goal should be to include every eligible citizen, not to disenfranchise marginalized and minority groups.”
Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh expressed his disappointment on Monday, stating, “This should have been a moment of national pride, but the Opposition’s absence indicates misplaced priorities.”
Meanwhile, Shukla arrived in New Delhi early Sunday at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, welcomed by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Minister Jitendra Singh.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Shukla engaged in a light-hearted dialogue regarding the latter's successful mission to the ISS, the first-ever undertaken by an Indian.
The meeting, held at the PM's official residence in New Delhi on Monday, allowed Shukla to brief the Prime Minister about his mission, where the Indian astronaut played a crucial role as part of the crew.
