New Delhi, Jan 17 (NationPress) The visit by Rahul Gandhi, the Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition (LoP), to the families suffering from the recent contaminated water crisis in Indore, has sparked intense political backlash, with prominent leaders from the BJP accusing him of engaging in “politics over tragedy.”
BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain spearheaded the criticism, claiming that the Madhya Pradesh government has already implemented all necessary actions to remedy the situation.
In response to LoP Gandhi’s visit, Hussain remarked to IANS, “All possible measures in Indore have already been taken. Action has been taken against everyone responsible. The Mohan Yadav government is fully aware of this. However, Rahul Gandhi is merely seeking a political opportunity. He is not functioning as a constitutional leader, but rather as a politician. This is why he visits every incident.”
Hussain asserted that the state administration had acted swiftly and responsibly, accusing the Congress leader of attempting to exploit a sensitive issue for political gain.
Similarly, BJP MP Naresh Bansal expressed that while the incident was regrettable, it should not be politicized.
“Certainly, strict action has been taken regarding the incident. Everyone feels pain and sorrow that such an event should not have occurred. However, I don’t believe the local residents will support Rahul Gandhi just because he is visiting for political reasons,” Bansal commented.
He further emphasized that the government’s focus remains on relief, treatment, and accountability rather than political theatrics.
LoP Gandhi's visit to Indore on Saturday included meeting with patients and families impacted by the recent outbreak of vomiting and diarrhea linked to water contamination in certain areas of the city, which has resulted in over two dozen fatalities.
During his visit, LoP Gandhi attended Bombay Hospital, a private medical facility, where he conversed with four patients currently receiving treatment. He inquired about their well-being, consulted with attending physicians, and offered comfort to family members.
Accompanied by Madhya Pradesh Congress President Jitu Patwari and fellow party leader Umang Singhar, LoP Gandhi stated that his visit was intended to comprehend the ground realities and show support for the affected individuals.
Later, he visited the Bhagirathpura area, identified as the epicenter of the outbreak reported last month, where he met with grieving families and extended his condolences.
While local residents have alleged that many lives were lost due to the contaminated water, the state government has officially confirmed seven fatalities.
