Mumbai, Feb 12 (NationPress) A 53-year-old resident of Wadala, employed as a ward attendant at the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation's VN Desai Hospital, succumbed to Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) at Nair Hospital. This marks the first reported death in Mumbai attributed to GBS.
The patient was admitted to Nair Hospital on January 23 due to a persistent fever.
Following a series of examinations, including a test for fluid in his brain, it was confirmed that he was suffering from GBS. Due to his critical condition, he received treatment in the intensive care unit of Nair Hospital.
Unfortunately, he passed away late Monday night, as reported by Nair Hospital Dean Shailesh Mohite.
A report from the Nair Hospital's Department of Community Medicine indicated that the cause of death was "Septic shock with Sepsis with lower respiratory tract infection with Guillain-Barre Syndrome."
The report detailed that the patient underwent intubation, tracheostomy, treatment with IV for five days, three cycles of plasmapheresis, and antibiotics for LRTI.
In a related case, a 16-year-old girl has been hospitalized at Nair Hospital exhibiting symptoms of GBS. Thankfully, her condition is stable as she receives treatment.
This young patient traveled from Palghar district for medical care and is currently in class 10.
According to the state Public Health Department, 197 suspected GBS cases have been recorded as of February 11. Out of these, 172 were confirmed to have GBS.
As of February 11, there have been a total of seven fatalities, with four confirmed deaths due to GBS and three under suspicion.
Among the 197 patients, 40 hailed from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), 92 from newly added villages in the PMC area, 29 from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, 28 from Pune rural, and eight from other districts.
State Public Health Minister Prakash Abitkar has urged citizens to remain calm and to take necessary precautions such as consuming boiled water and eating fresh food.
