The woman succumbed on Tuesday due to respiratory failure accompanied by sepsis, and she was also battling oral cancer.
The overall count of GBS cases in the state has escalated to 127.
As per reports from the Pune Municipal Corporation, the woman, who had been experiencing weakness, was hospitalized on January 15 and subsequently transferred to Sassoon General Hospital.
Earlier, on January 25, a 40-year-old man from Pune's Dhayari area passed away in Solapur. Medical professionals have forwarded his case report for further evaluation to determine if GBS was the cause.
The Public Health Department revealed that out of the 127 suspected instances, 72 have been confirmed as GBS.
The Pune Municipal Corporation has noted 13 new cases, with additional reports from the newly incorporated villages in the Pune Municipal Corporation area (73), Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (13), and nine each from Pune's rural and other districts. Currently, 20 individuals are on ventilators.
The state government has urged citizens to remain calm, while Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed the administration to establish special provisions in government hospitals for treating affected patients.
The Chief Minister emphasized the necessity for tailored arrangements in government facilities to ensure proper care for patients. The treatment for this condition is covered under the state health insurance initiative, 'Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana'.
“If any additional procedures are needed, they should be conducted by the Public Health Department,” stated CM Fadnavis.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar mentioned that directives have already been issued for treating GBS patients in Pune city at Kamla Nehru Hospital of the Pune Municipal Corporation and Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation.
State Public Health Minister Prakash Abitkar explained that GBS is a rare, non-contagious disease resulting from weakened immunity.
“A review has been conducted in Pune regarding this condition. Instructions have been provided concerning treatment and evaluation. Consequently, actions are being undertaken by the state Public Health Department and the health departments of both the Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporations,” he added.
State Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif urged the administration to effectively enforce the Standard Operating Procedures to mitigate GBS.
The Minister requested that daily updates on GBS patients be sent to the Commissioner of Medical Education and Research Department.
