Is the Global Ayyappa Meet in Vijayan's Government Under SIT Investigation?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 11 (NationPress) The Special Investigation Team (SIT), appointed by the Kerala High Court to investigate the Sabarimala gold theft case, has expanded its inquiry to scrutinize the contentious Global Ayyappa Meet that took place at Pampa last year, leaving some members of the Pinarayi Vijayan government in a state of alarm.
In a recent submission regarding the Sabarimala gold misappropriation case, the SIT highlighted the Global Ayyappa Meet organized during P.S. Prasanth’s presidency of the Travancore Devaswom Board.
Notably, the report points out the absence of documentation in the Devaswom Board's meeting minutes that sanctioned the event.
It raises significant questions about the financial management related to the gathering.
In light of this, an audit report revealing a financial deficit of Rs 3.4 crore incurred by the Devaswom Board due to the event is set to be presented to the High Court.
The court had previously mandated that no funds should be allocated from either the government or the Devaswom Board for the event, with organizers claiming that all expenses would be covered by sponsorship.
While Devaswom Minister V.N. Vasavan had previously estimated the total cost at approximately Rs 8 crore, it remains uncertain whether the entire amount was secured through sponsorship, despite his clear statement against using public funds.
The audit findings reveal that Rs 3.4 crore was withdrawn from the Board's surplus funds, prompting new legal and administrative inquiries.
In response to the SIT's findings, the Devaswom Board has convened a meeting.
Simultaneously, the Vigilance Department is expected to formally request the return of documents taken by the SIT from the Devaswom headquarters concerning the Sabarimala flagstaff reconstruction case.
Key records remain with the SIT, and officials have stated that thorough examination is necessary before further statements are recorded.
Previous findings have indicated procedural irregularities in the acceptance of gold for the flagstaff reconstruction, including incomplete documentation of donor information, further complicating the ongoing investigation surrounding financial practices at Sabarimala.
