Government Approves Strategic Bhubhu Jot Tunnel Project in Himachal Pradesh

Shimla, Dec 21 (NationPress) The long-anticipated strategic Bhubhu Jot tunnel in Himachal Pradesh has received clearance, as confirmed by an official announcement from the state government on Saturday.
The Ministry of Defence has formally advised the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to classify the Bhubhu Jot tunnel, in conjunction with the Ghatasani-Shilha-Bhubu Jot-Kullu National Highway, as a project of strategic significance.
In its correspondence, the Ministry of Defence emphasized the vital role this highway and tunnel will serve as an alternative route to Leh and Ladakh, greatly improving the operational readiness of the armed forces in forward areas.
Beyond its strategic importance, the tunnel is anticipated to yield considerable socio-economic advantages for the region, and budgetary allocations for the project will now be arranged accordingly.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu reiterated the state government's steadfast dedication to the Bhubhu Jot tunnel initiative.
“I personally met with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on October 25 to advocate for the prioritization of this project given its strategic importance. The matter was also discussed with Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. The construction of this tunnel would represent a significant milestone for the state’s development,” the official statement quoting Sukhu indicated.
The proposed Bhubhu Jot tunnel is expected to shorten the distance between Kangra and Kullu by over 50 km, providing immense advantages to the local community and boosting tourism in the area, thereby strengthening the local economy.
The state government is prioritizing tunnel construction to improve road connectivity, encourage sustainable development, and reduce environmental impact.
“The construction of the Bhubhu Jot tunnel would be a transformative milestone for Himachal Pradesh. This initiative would not only bolster strategic infrastructure but also stimulate socio-economic development in the region,” the Chief Minister added.
