Satheesan to form the next state government, clearing the final constitutional hurdle ahead of a swearing-in ceremony scheduled for Monday. Satheesan had called on the Governor at Lok Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram earlier in the evening, presenting letters of support from the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), which swept the Kerala Assembly elections with a commanding 102 seats in the 140-member House.

The process moved swiftly after the Congress Legislature Party unanimously elected Satheesan as its leader at a meeting held earlier in the day. Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph formally proposed Satheesan's name, which was seconded by Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan. UDF allies extended their support without dissent, giving Satheesan a clear majority well before he arrived at Lok Bhavan.

Cabinet Formation and Swearing-In

Efforts are now underway to finalise the full 21-member ministry — including the Chief Minister — so that all take oath together on Monday. Sources indicated that the Congress high command is working to lock in the complete Cabinet list before the weekend, aiming for a transition that signals both decisiveness and unity. The Kerala Legislative Assembly is expected to convene on 21 May, when all newly elected legislators will also take their oath of office.

Senior Leaders Laud UDF Victory

At the Congress Legislature Party meeting, senior national leaders including Mukul Wasnik and Deepa Dasmunsi addressed the gathering and praised the collective leadership of Satheesan, K.C. Venugopal, and Ramesh Chennithala in steering the UDF to its decisive victory. The remarks underscored the national party's satisfaction with the alliance's performance in a state it had lost to the Left in the previous cycle.

Contrast With Tamil Nadu Transition

The smooth constitutional exercise in Kerala stands in sharp contrast to the political turbulence Governor Arlekar navigated only days earlier while serving as Acting Governor of Tamil Nadu. In that instance, uncertainty over legislative numbers reportedly necessitated repeated consultations before Chief Minister Vijay could demonstrate sufficient backing to form the government. In Kerala, the UDF's commanding majority left little room for procedural delay or political suspense. Notably, this is the first time in over a decade that the Congress-led front returns to power in the state, ending two consecutive terms of Left Democratic Front (LDF) rule.

What Comes Next

With the Governor's invitation formalised, attention now shifts to the composition of the Cabinet — specifically which UDF allies receive ministerial berths and in what proportion. The swearing-in on Monday and the Assembly session on 21 May will mark the formal commencement of the new government's term.
