Governor of Manipur Inspects Border Fencing at India-Myanmar Frontier

Imphal, January 10 (NationPress) - Ajay Kumar Bhalla, the Governor of Manipur, made a visit to Moreh town on the India-Myanmar border on Friday. His agenda included reviewing the operations of the Integrated Check Post (ICP) and the ongoing border fencing initiatives.

Officials from the Land Ports Authority of India provided insights into the ICP's functionality and the trade dynamics between India and Myanmar.

A representative from Raj Bhavan stated that the Governor engaged with leaders from local civil society organisations (CSOs) to grasp their concerns.

Bhalla, a former Union Home Secretary, also interacted with various business and community representatives from Moreh, including members of the Border Trade Chamber of Commerce, Tamil Sangam, Manipur Muslim Council, and Gurkha Samaj, listening to their issues and apprehensions.

The community leaders highlighted the difficulties they faced due to the halt of cross-border trade activities since the Covid-19 pandemic began.

Additionally, the Governor toured the Indo-Myanmar Friendship Gates and proceeded to Govajang village, where he received updates from the Commanding Officer of the 25 Battalion of the Border Road Task Force (BRTF) regarding the border fencing progress.

During his visit, the Governor presented gifts to officials of the Border Road Organisation and local workers, offering them encouragement.

Since taking office on January 3, this was Bhalla's first official visit. He previously toured the Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts on January 7, where he urged leaders of various civil society organisations to collaborate with the administration in fostering peace.

His visit also included stops at relief camps in Churachandpur and Bishnupur, where he spoke with displaced individuals residing in these shelters since ethnic violence erupted in Manipur in May 2023.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has intensified efforts on the India-Myanmar border fencing near Moreh town in Tengnoupal district. Four northeastern states share a total of 1,643 km of border with Myanmar, of which Manipur accounts for 398 km. The entire expanse of the porous India-Myanmar border, notorious for arms, ammunition, and narcotics smuggling, is set to be fenced at a cost of Rs 31,000 crore.
