Piyush Goyal in Singapore: New doors for Indian farmers, food exporters in ASEAN
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday, 20 August said that fresh opportunities are being created for Indian farmers and processed food manufacturers to expand their footprint in Singapore, and by extension across the broader ASEAN region and the Australian market. The minister was speaking at an APEDA-FairPrice roadshow-cum-instore promotion in Singapore, designed to showcase the depth and diversity of India's agricultural and processed food exports.
What Is Being Promoted
The roadshow is spotlighting a wide range of Indian produce, including organic products, fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables, dairy products, cashew, rice, millet-based products, and goods sourced from different regions across India. 'Organic products, fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen fruits and vegetables, dairy products, cashew, rice, millet-based products, and products sourced from different regions of India are being promoted through this engagement,' Goyal posted on X.
Meetings on Finance, Technology and Infrastructure
On the sidelines of his Singapore visit, Goyal met Sopnendu Mohanty, Group CEO of Global Finance and Technology Network, a global advisory and investment firm headquartered in Singapore. Their discussions centred on deepening India-Singapore cooperation in financial innovation, technology, and the digital economy. 'We also exchanged views on how India's dynamic financial ecosystem and Singapore's global financial and technology network offer significant opportunities for greater collaboration,' Goyal said.
The minister also held talks with Cindy Lim, CEO of Keppel Infrastructure, focusing on collaboration in infrastructure development and sustainability. 'India remains committed to enabling investments and partnerships that support resilient infrastructure and sustainable growth,' Goyal noted.
4th India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable
Goyal also participated in the 4th India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable, joining Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada in engaging with their Singaporean counterparts. The roundtable covered deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) across advanced manufacturing, fintech, digitalisation, healthcare, and sustainability.
The Singapore engagement also included a meeting with Gan Siow Huang, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Trade and Industry, Singapore, underscoring the diplomatic weight attached to this trade push.
What This Signals for Indian Agri Exports
The APEDA-FairPrice collaboration marks a structured attempt to use Singapore as a gateway to the wider ASEAN bloc — a market of over 660 million consumers. This comes amid India's broader push to diversify its agricultural export destinations beyond traditional markets. Notably, millets and organic produce have emerged as priority categories, aligned with India's global 'Year of Millets' momentum. The roadshow format — combining trade diplomacy with direct retail shelf presence — reflects a shift toward market-pull strategies rather than supply-push alone.
