Government Enhances RELIEF Program for Exporters Including Egypt and Jordan
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 17 (NationPress) Due to the shifting geopolitical landscape in West Asia and its ongoing effects on maritime logistics in the Gulf and nearby areas, the government has broadened the list of countries eligible for the RELIEF program—Resilience & Logistics Intervention for Export Facilitation. This initiative, which is part of the Export Promotion Mission (EPM), was announced by the Commerce Ministry on Friday.
As part of this expansion, Egypt and Jordan have been included in the roster of eligible nations for shipments designated for delivery or transhipment, as per the provisions of the RELIEF framework, according to a statement from the Commerce Ministry.
Moreover, a policy circular dated April 15 has elucidated the details of Component II of RELIEF, particularly concerning ECGC insurance support. It has been specified that exporters who secure a new ECGC Whole Turnover Policy on or after March 16 will also qualify for assistance under Component II. This clarification aims to provide greater transparency and encourage broader participation among exporters, especially new policyholders, the statement added.
The actions taken by the government demonstrate its ongoing evaluation of the changing trade and logistics environment in the region and its dedication to addressing the emerging challenges faced by exporters. By extending the geographical reach of RELIEF, the government aims to ensure that exporters operating in the broader West Asia and North Africa corridor receive adequate support amid current disruptions, as stated in the announcement.
This extension is anticipated to enhance export resilience, maintain trade flows, and assist Indian exporters maneuvering through the present geopolitical and logistical uncertainties.
RELIEF was inaugurated on March 19 as a focused intervention to assist Indian exporters impacted by extraordinary freight increases, soaring insurance premiums, and export risks linked to conflicts in the Gulf and the larger West Asia maritime corridor. The intervention offers tailored support throughout the export cycle, including for shipments already made during the disruption period as well as future exports.
Implemented through ECGC as the lead agency, RELIEF encompasses support for insured exporters, facilitation of insurance coverage for upcoming shipments, and reimbursement aid for eligible MSME exporters confronted with excessive freight and insurance surcharge challenges.
