New Delhi, April 3 (NationPress) – The Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has instructed all states and Union Territories to enhance their proactive communication regarding the supply of LPG and other petroleum products. This request arises due to the ongoing spread of rumors and misinformation that have led to unnecessary public anxiety and panic buying.

In a letter dated April 2, 2026, Secretary Dr. Neeraj Mittal urged the Chief Secretaries of all States and Union Territories to conduct daily press briefings at senior levels. He stressed the importance of promptly sharing accurate information through both social and electronic media to reassure the public about sufficient stock and uninterrupted distribution of LPG, while effectively countering false narratives.

The letter references a prior communication from March 27, 2026, where the Ministry emphasized the necessity for ongoing engagement to thwart the spread of fake news concerning the availability and pricing of petrol, diesel, and LPG. Despite these measures, misinformation continues in various regions, resulting in avoidable hoarding and placing pressure on the distribution system.

Dr. Mittal expressed concern, noting feedback from state coordinators of Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) indicating that only 17 States and Union Territories are conducting regular or intermittent press briefings or issuing press releases. The Ministry is now urging a more vigorous and consistent communication strategy across all States and Union Territories.

The 17 States and Union Territories currently engaged in such communication initiatives include: Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

The April 2 letter also instructs states to take stringent measures against malpractices such as hoarding and black marketing of LPG and other petroleum products. Dr. Mittal requested the personal intervention of Chief Secretaries to ensure effective enforcement.

This advisory comes amid global supply chain disruptions caused by geopolitical events in West Asia, which have temporarily affected LPG availability in certain areas. While the Central Government has implemented several measures to enhance distribution, misinformation and fake news on social media platforms have worsened the situation, leading to panic buying and undue pressure on the supply chain.

In the March 27 DO letter, the Ministry had already highlighted that proactive, regular, and real-time communication through all channels, including daily senior-level press briefings, is crucial. The latest communication reiterates this stance and expresses dissatisfaction with the slow response from numerous States and Union Territories.

With this new advisory, the Centre anticipates that all States—particularly those not currently conducting regular briefings—will promptly establish robust mechanisms for public outreach. Inaction may allow misinformation to persist unchecked, ultimately harming both consumers and the distribution network.

Point of View

I emphasize the importance of transparency and effective communication in times of uncertainty. The government's proactive measures to combat misinformation are commendable, and it is crucial that all states respond promptly to restore public confidence in essential services.
